Healdsburg Jazz

From the Board – We are not holding the Festival as scheduled, May 29-June 7. We are looking for ways to keep jazz alive in 2020 and looking forward to planning in 2021. See Staying Connected (below) to see what Healdsburg Jazz is doing to keep jazz thriving for its supporters and for musicians.

We here at Healdsburg Jazz stand in firm solidarity with the black community. From the beginning, through the leadership of our founder Jessica Felix, Healdsburg Jazz has championed black music, presented black artists, and promotes and teaches black history through its educational programs every year. It should not be controversial to say “Black Lives Matter.” In fact, we should all be concerned about the injustices in our society that threaten the lives of the most vulnerable. We mourn the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmad Aubrey and call for peace and systematic changes to end all forms of police brutality and racism. Healdsburg Jazz will continue to represent and honor these values through our programming, education, and through the artists we present. #BLACKLIVESMATTER

Announcing Friday Night Live Stream Concerts

A Real-Time Online Jazz Concert Series Broadcast Direct From The Paul Mahder Gallery, Healdsburg, CA

Fridays, 7:00–9:00 PM, Pacific Time (PT),  10:00 PM–12:00 AM Eastern Time (ET)

Opening Night, Friday, June 26th featuring The Dry Creek Trio

Make it a Dinner Show

Beginning Friday, June 26th, Healdsburg Jazz will broadcast FREE real-time live stream concerts featuring local and Bay Area bands performing without an audience inside the Paul Mahder Gallery in Healdsburg. Our goal is not only to fulfill our mission to present concerts but also to financially support musicians during this difficult period when musicians’ performance opportunities have disappeared. They haven’t lost all their livelihood if they are teaching. They have lost all the performances that they had and still don’t know when live performances will start again.

Make it an Opening Night Dinner Show! Order in or pick up dinner to support your one of your favorite local restaurants, enjoy your preferred libation, sit back and enjoy the show.

Click the “See the Show” button above on June 26 to join the concert anytime after 7 PM PT.  Subscribe to our newsletter and we’ll remind you of these upcoming concerts. Concert and dinner details are here. On the night of the concert, click on the event link here on our Home page. While these concerts are FREE events, we do appreciate your donations to support this program.

Free Zoom Presentation Sunday, June 28, 5-7 PM (PT)

Presented by Healdsburg Jazz and funded by a Creative Sonoma Cultural Arts Grant.

The Life and Work of Charles Mingus

Hosted by James Newton

With Guest Craig Handy

Sunday, June 28, from 5-7 PM (PT)

Our Zoom series, Celebrating Jazz History and Culture, is curated by Jessica Felix and Marcus Shelby

Healdsburg Jazz is extremely honored that James Newton will be the host of our next FREE Zoom course with saxophonist Craig Handy as the featured guest.

“Tonight at Noon – Discussing the Art and Personage of Charles Mingus.” James Newton, world-renowned musician, composer, and educator will take us on a journey through the life and work of Charles Mingus, one of the most original bandleaders ever. Charles Mingus was a genius composer, bassist, and bandleader whose music is still appreciated and growing in its relevance. His compositions have endured and continue to drive passionate responses from his listeners because they deeply reflect a wide range of human conditions.

During the two-hour Zoom presentation, Newton will include insights passed down from his mentors Buddy Collette, Red Callender, and Danny Richmond, and draw upon his direct experience as a member of the Mingus Dynasty band in the 1980s. This band included Craig Handy, who will be a special guest during this presentation. Newton will include a unique oral history that cannot be found in books. He will also cover Mingus’s connection to Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Charles Christopher Parker (Charlie Parker), and others. Mingus’s critical essay, “Let My Children Hear Music,” will be discussed and will be posted on our website prior to the online program so that people can read it beforehand. He will conclude with Mingus orchestral compositions performed by the original Mingus Big Band. Read more or register now.

Help us share the gift of music. Even though presentations are free, donations are gladly accepted.

Donations go toward continuing online music education.dONATE tODAY
