Black & Latin History Month Elementary School Assemblies

In honor of Black History and Music, Each February a Solo Teaching artist leads a presentation with music and narrative, about how the Jazz and the music they play connect to African American culture.

2023 Destiny Muhammed (Harp)– “From Africa to Alice Coltrane”
2024 Terrence Brewer (Guitar)– “From Bebop to Hip Hop: The Story of Black American Music”

New this year we celebrate Latin History Month from September 23-October 3. The assemblies feature percussion and drums from Brazil’s “Carnaval” (the Mardi Gras of Brazil). This presentation will showcase the parade drums from Brazil as well as percussion instruments like the pandeiro, apitos, rebolo, udu, cuica, surdo, tamborim, and more! Included in the presentation will be some call and response, audience participation, and more!

Latin Heritage Month Assemblies
September 29 – October 3

We’ll visit eight elementary schools from Roseland, Santa Rosa to Cloverdale with a powerful presentation by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Monica Maria: “Corazón y Raíz: Nurturing Self-Expression and Connection through Community, Culture, and Music.”

Students will explore language, rhythm, and tradition through Monica’s unique musical lens, sparking creativity and cultural appreciation.
