28th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival Opening Night!

Ms. Lisa Fischer
and the Orrin Evans Trio
$31 – $131 | 7 – 8:30 pm
Raven Performing Arts Theater | 115 North Street | Healdsburg
Celebrate opening night with the great vocalist Lisa Fischer! Lisa’s voice can feel like a force of nature, swelling from a quiet murmur to a gale-force roar within the space of a syllable. Driven by her muse, her creative path has unfurled along similarly protean lines, leading her on a singular journey marked by collaborations with the most formidable artists in rock, R&B, jazz, and beyond. While she scored a chart-topping R&B hit and a Grammy Award for her 1991 debut album So Intense, Fischer spent the next two decades singing background for icons like The Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Sting, and Tina Turner. Featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom, she decided the time was ripe to define her own musical identity. Lisa has also forged a particularly deep connection with Philadelphia piano great Orrin Evans and his trio, featuring Clarence Penn on drums, and James Genus on bass.
This concert is underwritten by Healdsburg Jazz Patrons Howard & Barbara Wollner, and Gary Jaffe. Thank you!

Adam Shulman Sextet
$39 | 9:30 pm
Elephant in the Room | 1100 University Ave | Healdsburg
Adam Shulman is a San Francisco Bay Area-based pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator. Shulman is fortunate to have found and gathered around him a team of blue-chip sidemen who evidently are not only as passionate about bop as he is but are able to translate that ardor into action and improvise in that style about as well as anyone.
Trumpeter Mike Olmos, alto Jesse Levit, and tenor Patrick Wolff share the front line while Shulman, bassist Erik Markowitz and drummer Brian Fishler comprise a stalwart rhythm section that could have held its ground with any during the heralded Bop Era. Without singling anyone out for special praise, suffice to say that the solos by all hands (including the leader) are as keen and resourceful as those one might expect from their venerable predecessors. Shulman’s time-shifting sextet will perform original songs inspired by the great sextets of Horace Silver and Art Blakey.
This is an outdoor concert. Must be 21 and over to enter.
