Destiny Muhammad

Lunch Concert at Overshine with Destiny Muhammad Quintet

$78 | Noon – 2 p.m.

Overshine Wine | 2201 Westside Road | Healdsburg

Presented by Healdsburg Jazz MAJOR Sponsor Overshine Wine

Join us for an afternoon in the Dry Creek Valley at Overshine Wine. Music, poetry, food and wine. What more could you ask for? Drawing inspiration from the film Love Jones, the afternoon kicks-off with a glass of Overshine wine, delectable slices of Pizza Degen, and DJ Noah spinning vinyl in the tasting room, accompanied by poet Genny Lim, San Francisco’s Poet Laureate. We will then transition outdoors to the elevated concert area for a performance featuring the talented harpist, vocalist, and the remarkable Destiny Muhammad Quintet.

Harpist Destiny Muhammad describes her musical influences as Celtic to Coltrane and heavily inspired by the innovative harp player Dorothy Ashby. Destiny Muhammad has been described by SFJAZZ as a “masterful, exploratory musician.” Whether interpreting jazz standards or her spiritually charged original tunes, exploring hip-hop, Muhammad turns every piece into a soulful adventure.

About Overshine Wine

Overshine Wine was founded by David Drummond with Sam Bilbro and Thomas DeBiase by his side. David’s California roots and love for wine, combined with his brother’s multiple years of playing at the Healdsburg Jazz Fest brought David to Healdsburg. Upon meeting Sam and Thomas, David tasted wines that inspired his curiosity for what wines could be like here —where the music was turned up, and the feeling was joyous and welcoming. He saw a future for wine that could do and be more. The friendship was instant and together they began to dream up what is now Overshine.

Melba’s Kitchen in the Plaza

6 – 8 p.m. | FREE

Healdsburg Plaza | Corner of Healdsburg Ave and Matheson

Celebrating Black women musical geniuses Melba Liston and Mary Lou Williams, Melba’s Kitchen takes a deep dive into the sophisticated and soulful compositions and arrangements of these jazz giants who accomplished so much, yet were recognized in such low proportion to what they contributed. The performance includes a mix of concert pieces showcasing Liston, Williams, and their friends, plus a healthy menu of dance tunes, and a taste of the band’s originals. A musical journey you’ll never forget! A trombonist and arranger of the highest order, Melba Liston cut a singular figure across the latter half of the 20th century as the only female horn player to tour and record with leading jazz orchestras, including bands led by Gerald Wilson, Dizzy Gillespie, and Quincy Jones. No group has done more to keep her book of ingenious charts in circulation than Melba’s Kitchen, the 14-piece all-women East Bay combo co-led by trombonist Pat Mullan and saxophonist Nzingah Smith. Named an NEA Jazz Master in 1987, Liston is best known for a series of groundbreaking recordings with pianist/composer Randy Weston. But she thrived as a freelance arranger too, and Melba’s Kitchen dishes out specialties that the women have gathered from far-flung sessions, including the sole album that Liston recorded under her own name. True to the moniker, Melba’s Kitchen serves up the tastiest jazz in town.

Melba’s Kitchen is a “talent-packed ensemble” (Andy Gilbert), “so astonishing – so swinging” (Dr. Dee Spencer), that delivers “a marvelous night and good vibes all around.” (Rebeca Mauleon)
