Branford Marsalis
Branford Marsalis Q1 Zach Smith

An Evening with Branford Marsalis

$41 – $331 | 7:30 – 9 pm
Bacchus Landing | 14210 Bacchus Landing Way | Healdsburg

From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, saxophonist Branford Marsalis has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining an unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence, winning three Grammy Awards, a Tony nomination for his work as a composer on Broadway, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as Jazz Master, and a 2021 Primetime EMMY nomination for the score he composed for the Tulsa Burning documentary.

Branford Marsalis’s quartet is one of jazz’s most formidable working bands, a casually virtuosic ensemble whose players take evident delight in each other’s company. Pianist Joey Calderazzo and bassist Eric Revis, both acclaimed recording artists in their own right, have been touring and recording with the eldest Marsalis sibling since the late 1990s. The band’s latest arrival, other-worldly drummer Justin Faulkner, joined the group in 1999 at the age of 18, stepping with aplomb into the imposing shoes of universally venerated Jeff “Tain” Watts. Despite his junior status, Faulkner is the straw that stirs the drink, a riveting performer with a dynamic range as deep as any drummer on the scene. Every quartet performance reaches for glory. This concert will draw from his latest Blue Note album, Belonging, inspired by Keith Jarrett’s 1974 album.

Concert underwritten by Healdsburg Jazz Patrons Louis & Lynda Jordan and Kerry Francis & John Jimerson. Thank you!

Howard Alden

Howard Alden Quartet

$49 | 9:30 pm
Elephant in the Room | 177 Healdsburg Ave | Healdsburg

A guitarist’s guitarist, Howard Alden has been a creative force in jazz for more than four decades. Bay Area audiences got to know him early on when he was a mainstay at Concord Records, recording prolifically with much older masters, such as pianist Dick Hyman, cornetist Ruby Braff and 7-string guitar pioneer George Van Eps, and a brilliant cadre of mainstream swing contemporaries, including reed expert Ken Peplowski, trumpeter Warren Vaché Jr., and trombonist Dan Barrett. Whatever the context, including on the soundtrack to the Woody Allen movie “Sweet Lowdown,” Alden is a consummate improviser hailed for his beautiful touch, commanding sense of swing, and supple phrasing. Jazz’s foremost master of the 7-string guitar, he’s mesmerizing as a solo act, but thrives in the company of players equally committed to close listening and hard grooving. Band members include Patrick Wolff (tenor saxophone), Marcus Shelby (bass), and Sylvia Cuenca (drums).

This concert is underwritten by Healdsburg Jazz Patron David Stare. Thank you!

This is an outdoor concert. Must be 21 and over to enter.
