Watch our Jazz history and cultural legacy presentations and interactive discussions. This collection includes 17 2-hour-long videos, with artists such as Billy Hart, Joey DeFrancesco, Helen Sung, Mark Cary, and Denise Perrier, among many others. The program, hosted by our Artistic Director bassist, and composer Marcus Shelby, started as a response to the pandemic in April 2020 and continued until March 2022.

Maya Angelou: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

A conversation honoring Maya Angelou and her “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, a book many say is the best of five autobiographical volumes the gifted African American author wrote.

With our Poet Laureate Enid Pickett and guests Sabryyah Abdullah, local KWTF radio host and Healdsburg Jazz Member; Dr. Michael Hale, Santa Rosa Junior College English Professor; Skylaer Palacios, Healdsburg Council Member; Carlton Page, author of two books; and Nancy Pritchard, Healdsburg Jazz Member & Choir Member.

Convergence, by Artist in Residence Tammy L. Hall

Convergence is a jazz concert and a dramatization celebrating Women’s History Month 2021. This unique project was created and conceived by our Artist in Residence Tammy L. Hall, featuring pianists Victoria Theodore and Tammy in an imagined musical conversation between legends Nina Simone and Mary Lou Williams.

Tammy L. Hall and Victoria Theodore are accompanied by Sylvia Cuenca on drums and Ruth Davies on bass, and with actress and Spoken Word artist RyanNicole, who narrates the story of a fictitious meeting in a hotel lobby between these two iconic pianists.

Martin Luther King: Through the Eyes of Children

One hour of music and spoken word inspired by and dedicated to the legacy of MLK and the music of the Civil Rights Movement.

This video concert features vocalists Kim Nalley and Tiffany Austin, who have each championed freedom songs and black liberation music their entire careers. Pianist Tammy Lynn Hall performs her original arrangement of “We Shall Overcome” and poet Enid Pickett, her commissioned poem “118 Days.” Youth Poet Selma Asantewa Apara performs “On the Importance of Jazz.” Other musicians include drummer Genius Wesley and bassist Marcus Shelby.

2020 Virtual Gala Fundraiser

In our 2020 Virtual Gala Fundraiser, friends of Healdsburg Jazz and music lovers had the opportunity to meet the new Artistic Director Marcus Shelby, and learn about his vision for the next generation of Healdsburg Jazz.

The enjoyable evening was full of performances by Marcus Shelby, Tiffany Austin, Mónica María, Enid Pickett, and Tammy Hall. There was an opportunity to hear from the community leaders Carrie Brown, Gina Gallo and Circe Sher. You will learn about Healdsburg Jazz’s two decades of educational programs for children and adults in our community. Part of the Gala included a fund-a-need for Education and our virtual Auction.

Healdsburg Jazz is a 23-year-old music, education, and performance non-profit, with an emphasis on bringing America’s indigenous music art form of jazz to greater public appreciation.

Romero Lubambo and Claudia Villela

A powerhouse of Brazilian bossa nova jazz, guitarist Romero Lubambo and vocalist Claudia Villela are a virtuoso pair. He is renowned for his distinctive sound as one of the preeminent figures in Brazilian jazz guitar, and she for her five-octave range and creative stylings. Together, they have been hailed as the most brilliant expression of Brazilian music in the United States today.

Cosa Nostra Strings

The Eclectic, genre-bending chamber ensemble Cosa Nostra Strings is a band of musical misfits who find common ground among classical and chamber music, metal, hip hop, R&B, jazz, drum & bass, and EDM. The ensemble has honed its singular sound through collaboration and regular performance will perform all original music composed by each member of the band. Featuring Shaina Evoniuk – violin, Keith Lawrence – viola and vocals, Lewis Pazner – cello, Aaron Kierbel – multi-percussionist, Adam Theis – bass and trombone.

Sandy Cressman and Homenagem Brasileira

This special concert with vocalist Sandy Cressman, Jeff Cressman, and her band Homenagem Brasileira celebrates the music of great Brazilian composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, and João Bosco, and includes selections from her latest album “Entre Amigos”. Adam Shulman Trio Featuring Kenny Washington

The Adam Shulman Trio features Kenny Washington on vocals with some of the Bay’s pre-eminent jazz musicians joining forces to present a night of tunes from the Great American Songbook and beyond. The backing trio consists of eminently supportive yet interactive players. Everyone in the band has been stuck at home with little outlet for their creativity. Come witness them unleash! Adam Shulman – piano, Kenny Washington – vocals, Ron Belcher – bass, Jeff Marrs – drums.

Carlitos Medrano “Bridge to Havana”

Medrano introduces you to a truly Cuban cultural journey with an original repertoire that includes music from the genres of Danzón, Cha Cha Cha, Bolero, Rumba, Descarga, Son, Timba and Afro Cuban Jazz. He calls this new compilation “Bridge To Havana.” The Lineup includes: Carlitos Medrano – percussion, Sulkary Valverde – vocals, Julio César de la Cruz – piano, Ernesto Mazar Kindelan – bass, Galen Green – Sax & Flute, Colin Douglas – drums, Michel Medrano – percussion.

Stephanie Ozer Trio

The Stephanie Ozer Trio showcases an evening of familiar and contemporary Brazilian gems. The music reflects and revisits other genres that inform the group’s collective musical experiences, including American jazz, classical, original, and jazz-inflected popular songs. This concert is performed in duo, trio, and solo settings, utilizing the intimate streaming format to highlight the music’s textures and emotions. SambaNoma

SambaNoma –  In United States, jazz developed out of the African American experience and continues to this day to absorb and incorporate influences from all music styles. Brazil also had many forms emerge out of the Afro-Brazilian experience, with other influences blended in. SambaNoma plays some of the music we love deriving from that cross-pollination, selections from the mid-twentieth century through today. Ricardo Peixoto Trio

Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Peixoto reunites with long time collaborators, well known Brazilian pianist Marcos Silva and virtuoso bassist Aaron Germain for a live stream concert of Brazilian flavored music, their own compositions, and Brazilian classics. Enjoy these wonderful musicians as they explore a diverse mix of musical material with great arrangements and spontaneous improvisations. Lorca Hart ‘Bridges’ Quartet

The Lorca Hart “Bridges” Quartet is rooted in the classic Jazz organ band sound (Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, Jazz Standards and Be-Bop) while also exploring more contemporary elements (original compositions, John Scofield, Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, R+B and pop tunes) to create its own unique musical identity. Rhonda Benin ‘Withers to Wonders”

Vocalist Rhonda Benin brings her unique combination of jazz, blues, and soul with a show featuring the tunes of Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, along with Rhonda’s original tunes. “Rhonda Benin is a tremendously assured singer who inhabits the celebratory zone where jazz, soul and blues fraternize freely.” Joining Rhonda are: Glen Pearson – piano, Alcide Marshall – drums, Ron Belcher – bass, and Geechi Taylor – trumpet.
